Weird Junction With 18 Traffic Lights

A Christchurch intersection that has 18 visitors lights has been described as bizarre and an overkill by residents.
However, the native council says the signals, which cost about $a hundred and sixty,000, are designed to minimise delays on the "advanced" junction which will likely be utilized by trams, cars, cyclists and pedestrians.
The intersection at Tuam and Excessive streets had no indicators previous to the devastating 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, however greater than a dozen have sprung up over the previous 18 months as a part of the rebuild.
"It appears weird - I've by no means seen an intersection with 18 traffic lights earlier than.. it appears barely overkill," Troy Barnett, who works on nearby Manchester Road, instructed NZ Newswire on Thursday.
Another resident, Haan Asadi, mentioned it seemed strange, especially given it was a 30km/h zone and a few streets were one-manner.
Chris Gregory, head of transport at Christchurch City Council, says the intersection was extra complex than others across the metropolis as it would service two tram traces, autos, pedestrians and a cycleway.
At present, it isn't a significant thoroughfare as many of the area is under construction, nonetheless it is going to connect the South Frame, Innovation Precinct, the Ara Polytechnic campus and the central city after the rebuild.
"The complex nature of the High/Tuam Street intersection requires the poles and the necessity for each pole will turn into apparent once the signal heads are installed and in operation," Mr Gregory said.
He added that the system would minimise delays and permit site visitors and pedestrians to circulate extra easily.
Some "normal" junctions have up to 12 signal poles.
The alerts are resulting from start operating subsequent month.
